  • Plan your meals with leftovers in mind so you can stretch one meal into two and save time in the kitchen.
  • Make a shopping list and stick to it. Impulse buys are budget killers!
  • Don’t shop hungry.
  • Sign up for free grocery store rewards programs. Besides saving you money on groceries these programs will also sometimes offer perks like points for discounted gas and send you sales info.
  • Keep an eye on weekly sales and take advantage of sale prices on items you regularly buy.
  • Compare brand and store brand by cost per unit or oz. besides saving you money, some products are even made by the same company. (A Google search will send you down a rabbit hole on this topic.)
  • Pay attention to price per oz or unit. Often the bigger size is a better deal than the smaller size, but sometimes it’s not.
  • Coupons! You can find many online as well as in the Sunday paper with anything from $0.25 – $2.00 off. Some stores even double coupons, doubling your savings. And yes, you can use coupons in the self check-out line.
