Moving Tips

Happy family moving and playing at the same time

No matter how you look at it, moving is not super fun.

We’ve been through many, many moves ourselves and now you can benefit from our mistakes. As you prepare for your next big move, here’s a checklist to make things a little easier:

  1. Reserve your moving truck or schedule movers the minute you clear inspection and initial loan approval. Waitlists/reservations book up quickly, but generally require little to no deposit. If you are not planning on packing yourself, scheduling packers should also be included in this step (if you are packing yourself, start now – really, start now). Waiting until the last minute could mean paying a higher amount or not securing a truck/movers at all, adding unneeded stress to what should be an exciting time! If you are doing the move yourself, make sure you reserve a moving truck with a loading ramp (your back will thank you!) and invest in a dolly, furniture pads/covers, mattress covers, and tie-down straps/rope. *Additional tip: schedule your truck or movers to come a day or two after your first available move-in date in case of last-minute touch-ups or to keep the space empty for a deep clean.
  2. Secure your packing materials. Start now. To save money, post on Nextdoor or local Facebook groups and check Craigslist; many people will give these items away for free or at a much lower cost than buying brand new (don’t forget packing tape and bubble wrap). While packing, remember to keep important documents out and in one place, pack essential items last, and label your boxes (an inventory or at least a box count is also a must). Avoid mixing items from different rooms to make unpacking easier. Keep extra boxes/bags aside for items to sell, donate, or toss – you don’t want to pay to move things you aren’t using. To condense boxes, consider using linens, towels, and larger clothing items to wrap breakables in. Tape loose screws/cords to the items they belong to.
  3. Find out if your cable/internet provider services your new area. If a new provider is needed, installation can have a 2-3 week waitlist. You don’t want to miss the next episode of your favorite show or be forced to go to your local coffee shop for Internet.
  4. Call utility companies at least 2 weeks prior to moving so the services are active on your move-in date. No one likes to move in the dark! Make sure to also get these services scheduled to turn off at your current residence on your move-out date.
  5. Make your last grocery trip for fresh items two weeks prior to moving. Perishable items should be used or tossed depending on the distance of your move. Having to keep items cold in transit is an unnecessary stressor that can be easily avoided.
  6. Update your address 1 week prior with USPS, along with any other services such as your bank(s), employer, car insurance, favorite online retailers, etc. While USPS will forward your mail with the date you list, items can still be delivered to your old address during the crossover if they were sent prior to the update. The last thing you want is personal information or packages delivered to your old address!
  7. Set aside basics for immediate use: Shower essentials (including a shower curtain if needed for your new home), towels, toothbrush/toothpaste, a few changes of clothes/pajamas, paper towels, paper plates/plastic dinnerware, cleaning supplies, vacuum/mop, blankets/pillows, chargers for phones/laptops/tablets ready and easily accessible for your first couple nights. Move these items yourself if possible. Unpacking takes time, but that doesn’t mean you need to be uncomfortable!
  8. Last, but not least: WELCOME HOME! Moving isn’t fun, but don’t let that dampen the thrill of that first night in your new home. Now, pop open that bottle of champagne and celebrate!
